in today's challenging workplace
What are soft skills?
Pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines requires many years of knowledge and skill acquisition.
The transition to become an effective professional entails much more than academic knowledge and research acquired through higher learning institutions. It requires awareness and an investment of time to identify and to develop key professional skills necessary for success in any chosen career path.
Soft skills are personal competencies that improve human performance, facilitate effective interactions, complement the technical requirements necessary to acquire and maintain employment.
Examples of soft skills
- Communications – verbal, written, active listening, netiquettes, body language
- Strategies – decision making, problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, ability to locate and use information
- Self-management – professionalism, emotional intelligence, work ethic, time-management, attitude, integrity, resilience, predictability
- Team work – collaboration, ability to operate effectively in a team environment
- Leadership – negotiation, compromise, conflict management, managing diversity and inclusion, cultural awareness, negotiation, delegation
